After a goalless draw with Costa Rica in their opening match, Brazil put in an impressive performance and claimed a big win over Paraguay at the 2024 Copa America.

The match started with a fairly even first 30 minutes, with both teams having attacking opportunities but failing to score. The first notable incident occurred in the 29th minute, when Brazil was awarded a penalty for a Paraguayan defender handling the ball in the box. However, Paqueta missed the penalty, sending the ball over the crossbar.

However, just 2 minutes later, Vinicius Jr opened the scoring for Brazil with a neat finish in the penalty area. This was Brazil’s first goal in this tournament.

Brazil added two more goals late in the first half. In the 43rd minute, Savio was there to tap the rebound into an empty net after a save from the Paraguayan goalkeeper. Just seconds before half-time, Vinicius Jr. scored his second goal of the tournament, after a mistake from Paraguayan defender Alderete, to make it 3-0 for Brazil.

In the second half, Paraguay unexpectedly shortened the score to 1-3 thanks to a beautiful long-range shot by Alderete, who made a mistake at the end of the first half.

However, Paraguay’s hopes were quickly extinguished when Brazil was awarded a second penalty in the 63rd minute. This time, Paqueta made no mistake, he coolly kicked the free kick past the opposing goalkeeper, making the score 4-1 for Brazil.

Paraguay’s attacking efforts were not rewarded, things became more difficult when in the 81st minute, Paraguay player Andrés Cubas received a red card for violent behavior and was sent off.

At the end of the match, Brazil won 4-1 against their South American opponent. Paraguay was officially eliminated from the tournament after losing two consecutive matches and had no chance to compete for a ticket to the Quarterfinals.

With this victory, the Brazilian team now has 4 points and still has a chance to top Group D when they will meet Colombia – the team with 6 points in the final match of the group stage. Currently, Colombia is leading the group after defeating Costa Rica with a score of 3-0 in the previous match.
