Arsenal faces stiff competition from Chelsea in the race to sign Bologna’s ‘jewel’

Arsenal have moved ahead in the race to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna after making an offer for the defender.

Arsenal have approached the young centre-back with a long-term plan that Sky Sport in Italy say is more attractive than offers from Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , Liverpool, West Ham and Juventus are also interested in the Italian, but have not made any concrete offers so far.

The North London side are reportedly hoping to reach an agreement with the 22-year-old by the end of the week, while Fabrizio Romano has said he is open to joining Arsenal and that only Arsenal and Chelsea are in talks with him.

Calafiori has been a key player for Bologna since arriving from Swiss side Basel last year. He played 33 times in all competitions as the team, then coached by Thiago Motta, qualified for the Champions League. He also made his international debut in early June before playing in all three of Italy’s group games at Euro 2024, but was suspended for the last-16 defeat to Switzerland.

The former Roma and Genoa player will have to consider his options as Arsenal and Chelsea try to lure him to the English capital and hopes to reach an agreement with Bologna, where he is contracted until 2027.
