Brazil to Begin Tournament Against Costa Rica on Monday Without Key Veterans Casemiro and Neymar

Brazil will play Costa Rica in their 2024 Copa América opener on Monday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. They will be keen to start the tournament strong to show that they can compete with Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, and other teams. Neymar’s injury won’t help their case, and another experienced player who won’t be playing in the US is Casemiro, a former midfielder for Real Madrid.

Why is Neymar not participating in the Copa América in 2024?

It was hardly shocking that Neymar was left off the head coach Dorival Júnior’s 26-man roster for the competition, given that the former Barcelona attacker tore his ACL last October while representing his nation in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. The 32-year-old is getting close to making a comeback, but he was never given any thought.

Casemiro’s challenging Manchester United seasonCasemiro, on the other hand, was one of Brazil’s best players in recent years and appeared in 32 games for Manchester United in the 2023–24 season.

But he received a lot of flak for his play for the Premier League’s biggest teams last season, and many people were surprised when Dorival Júnior decided to leave the five-time Champions League winner off his roster for practical reasons.

The Brazil coach stated, “Casemiro deserves respect from all of us,” following the announcement of his preliminary team for the May event. I told him what I expected of him three months ago. He is completely aware of my opinions about him.

I gave him my assessment of his predicament, his team’s predicament, and his needs. The fact that he is not arriving now does not imply that he is or will be disqualified in the future.

The inexperienced roster of BrazilDue to the absence of Neymar (128 caps) and Casemiro (75 caps), Brazil’s lineup for the tournament is notably inexperienced. Only five players on the roster have played more than 30 games for their country, and 15 players on the roster enter the 2024 Copa América with 10 caps or less.
