‘He’s unstoppable:’ Stephen A. Smith says Ja Morant will lead Memphis Grizzlies to playoffs

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has seen enough.

“I believe that Memphis will find themselves overcoming this 6-19 hole because of Ja Morant,” Smith said on “First Take” on Wednesday morning. “And they’ll make it to the play-in game, and they’ll make it to the playoffs. Because of that brother. That’s how great he is.”

Morant returned from his 25-game suspension to start the season by leading the Memphis Grizzlies to a road win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. Morant had a dominant second half and hit a game winning shot with no time remaining to lead his team to a win.

“I said from the very beginning, when this brother comes back after a 25-game absence, he is going to wreak havoc,” Smith said. “This is a superstar-caliber player. He’s unstoppable. You can’t stop him from getting into the lane. He can do that when he wants to.”

Smith said Wednesday that Morant knows the Grizzlies wouldn’t have come into Tuesday’s game with a 6-19 record if he was on the floor and is “absolutely sensational.” The Grizzlies have been without several other key pieces because of injuries, including Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard. They’re both expected back soon, while starting center Steven Adams is out for the season.

“In terms of the media, listen, ‘You did what you did. It was in the news,'” Smith said. “‘The commissioner suspended you. You verbalized Mea Culpas. Whatever receipts that you keeping, it shouldn’t be with any pundits or commentators on the air, it should be with the cats that never called to check up on you. You should be taking it out all on them because Memphis needs you to in order to get back into the playoff picture.’ Which I believe he will do.”

The Grizzlies play again Thursday night when they host the Indiana Pacers. That will be Morant’s first home game this season.
